GreenRoots Festival 2026. Badolato, un sabato di settembre<\/em><\/p>

Nei giorni prima del festival non facevamo che guardare il cielo. All'inizio non per la pioggia, ma per il vento. Avevamo passato settimane a costruire un luogo che prima non esisteva: teli tesi contro il sole, una grande tenda centrale che sarebbe diventata il cuore di tutto. E poi \u00e8 arrivato il vento, forte e ostinato, e restavamo svegli la notte convinti che si sarebbe portato via tutto quanto: i teli, la tenda, le settimane di lavoro di sei volontari e della nostra presidente, Roberta.<\/p>

Ha tenuto. Tutto quanto. Il sabato mattina il vento si era placato, la tenda era in piedi, e la gente cominciava ad arrivare.<\/p>

Roberta ha aperto la giornata, e l'ha aperta con onest\u00e0. Non siamo qui, ha detto, per dire a nessuno cosa deve fare. Siamo venuti a condividere qualcosa che abbiamo imparato con le nostre mani, nella nostra terra, e a capire insieme come funzionano davvero il suolo, le piante e tutto ci\u00f2 che vive in mezzo. Viviamo in un momento in cui tutto sembra troppo: troppo grande, troppo lontano dalle nostre mani, ed \u00e8 proprio questa sensazione che ci tenta a non fare niente. E per cosa, poi?<\/em> Ma un senso c'\u00e8. Siamo responsabili delle nostre vite, dei nostri orti, dei nostri campi, e questo \u00e8 gi\u00e0 tantissimo. Un granello di sabbia fa venire voglia a un altro di aggiungere il suo. Il granello diventa un mucchio, e il mucchio diventa una rivoluzione. Ci credete anche voi, ha detto alla sala, altrimenti non vi sareste svegliati presto di sabato per venire a Badolato.<\/p>

Poi \u00e8 arrivato il momento della parola che avrebbe portato avanti tutta la mattina: compost.<\/strong><\/p>

Siamo andati insieme alla zona del compostaggio, quaderni alla mano, e abbiamo costruito l\u00ec, sul momento, una pila calda, strato dopo strato, spiegando ognuno di essi. Qualche giorno prima i volontari ne avevano costruita una seconda, cos\u00ec che quando abbiamo infilato il termometro ognuno potesse leggere il numero con i propri occhi. La lancetta era salita fino in fondo, nel calore della decomposizione attiva. Puoi parlare quanto vuoi di attivit\u00e0 microbica, ma \u00e8 un'altra cosa avvicinare la mano a un mucchio di materia morta e sentirlo emanare calore come un corpo vivo.<\/p>

Dopo la pausa caff\u00e8 \u00e8 arrivata la parte che amiamo di pi\u00f9 insegnare. Comincia, come comincia tutto, dalla fotosintesi, e da quel fatto strano e generoso per cui una pianta manda buona parte degli zuccheri che produce gi\u00f9 nel suolo, di proposito, per nutrire la vita intorno alle sue radici.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Da l\u00ec tutto il cast invisibile: batteri, funghi, protozoi, nematodi, ognuno dei nostri piccoli amici con i suoi attrezzi, i batteri con poco pi\u00f9 di un cacciavite, i funghi con un'intera cassetta degli attrezzi, che si mangiano a vicenda e si passano i minerali finch\u00e9 non arrivano alla pianta che ha dato inizio a tutto. Ci sono state domande. Ci sono stati volti che cambiavano a met\u00e0 di una frase. E poi la rizofagia: le piante che tirano dentro i batteri attraverso le radici, li digeriscono, e li lasciano andare di nuovo. Le piante, a quanto pare, non sono vegetariane. Raramente abbiamo visto una sala svegliarsi cos\u00ec in fretta.<\/p>

Poi \u00e8 arrivata la pioggia, forte a tratti, e non ha avuto la minima importanza, perch\u00e9 la tenda centrale ha fatto esattamente ci\u00f2 per cui l'avevamo costruita. Sono rimasti tutti all'asciutto, e ad ascoltare, sotto il suo rumore.<\/p>

Il pranzo \u00e8 arrivato da un ristorante di Davoli: piatti del posto, generosi, il genere di cibo che tiene la gente a tavola pi\u00f9 a lungo di quanto avesse previsto. E quell'attardarsi non \u00e8 una pausa dal festival. \u00e8<\/em> il festival: il parlare, lo scambiarsi storie, il formarsi silenzioso di legami che accade solo davanti a un piatto condiviso.<\/p>

Il pomeriggio \u00e8 stato prima di tutto di Giorgia Liberati<\/strong>di Radici Connesse, venuta a parlare di estratti e t\u00e8 di compost. Il suo punto di forza \u00e8 stato che niente \u00e8 rimasto sulla teoria. Lavora nel nord Italia, e ha portato numeri: risultati veri su vite, kiwi, perfino olivi. Le domande le sono arrivate addosso come una piccola tempesta, e a ognuna ha risposto, finch\u00e9 la gente non solo ascoltava ma proponeva i propri esperimenti. \u00c8 diventata una conversazione.<\/p>

Poi abbiamo chiuso la parte didattica della giornata con l'argomento a cui Terranima non riesce a smettere di pensare: il parallelo tra la microbiologia del suolo e quella del nostro intestino. Alla lavagna abbiamo disegnato i due apparati digerenti uno accanto all'altro. Quello della pianta comincia fuori di s\u00e9, negli zuccheri che offre ai microbi intorno alle radici, cos\u00ec come il nostro comincia in bocca; i primi vermi e insetti che scompongono la materia sono una specie di denti. E poi la frase che tende a colpire pi\u00f9 forte: spruzziamo antibiotici sui nostri campi, diverse volte l'anno, e poi ci chiediamo perch\u00e9 il suolo dimentica come si digerisce.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Cos\u00ec abbiamo concluso con una domanda nostra. Come si cambia davvero tutto questo? Da dove si comincia, anche solo?<\/em> C'era chi era certo che queste pratiche non potessero mai funzionare su larga scala. Altri rispondevano che gi\u00e0 funzionano, e portavano esempi. E poi una partecipante ha proposto qualcosa di semplice e concreto: un gruppo di noi, un pezzo di terra, una prova condivisa, per imparare insieme e dimostrarlo insieme. Alla fine ci si \u00e8 scambiati i contatti, e due agricoltori del posto hanno deciso di provare questi metodi sulla propria terra, insieme a Terranima e Giorgia: uno con olivi e agrumi, e un altro che coltiva appena fuori Badolato. Da quell'ultima ora sono uscite idee che speriamo davvero mettano radici nelle prossime settimane.<\/p>

Alcune delle persone sotto la tenda erano state con noi l'anno prima, e ci hanno raccontato, sottovoce, che il festival aveva cambiato il modo in cui lavorano la loro terra: che erano tornati a casa, avevano provato i preparati, e li avevano visti funzionare.<\/p>

Siete stati meravigliosamente chiari, trasmettendo la vostra conoscenza in modo semplice e amorevole per ispirarci a iniziare e continuare. Grazie di cuore. \u2014 una partecipante<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>

Poi la giornata ha cambiato forma. Tre sessioni hanno fatto da ponte tra la parte di studio e la sera: danza con Yamila, yoga con Giuseppe, e un incontro con Lorena che intrecciava il movimento alla scrittura. \u00c8 stata la cerniera, dove il laboratorio si ammorbidiva in qualcosa di pi\u00f9 condiviso, di pi\u00f9 fisico. E la parte conviviale si \u00e8 costruita da sola, come sempre succede alle cose migliori. Chi aveva passato la giornata al corso \u00e8 rimasto. Chi \u00e8 arrivato solo nel pomeriggio si \u00e8 unito, compresi alcuni che non erano riusciti a trovare posto al laboratorio ma non volevano perdersi la rigenerazione sociale<\/em>.<\/p>

La pizza, dal forno a legna, \u00e8 piaciuta. La musica \u00e8 piaciuta. Le luci appese tra gli olivi sono piaciute. Bambini, persone pi\u00f9 anziane, un cane o due, agricoltori, semplici curiosi: tutto si \u00e8 intrecciato in un'unica sera di musica, balli e buona compagnia sotto gli alberi.<\/p>

Era bello fermarsi a guardarlo. E si vedeva che anche le persone l\u00ec lo sentivano.<\/p>

Questa giornata l'avevamo costruita per riparare la gente dal sole e dalla pioggia, e cos\u00ec \u00e8 stato. Ma ci\u00f2 che stavamo costruendo davvero era un luogo in cui prendersi cura, allo stesso tempo, del suolo e delle persone: un luogo in cui non serve essere gi\u00e0 agricoltori per sentirsi a casa.<\/p>

Se qualcosa di tutto questo ti fa venire voglia di esserci la prossima volta: bene. Vieni. Terremo le luci accese tra gli olivi.<\/p>

The day we raised the invisible GreenRoots Festival 2026 \u2014 Badolato, one Saturday in September \u00a0 For days before the festival we kept watching the sky. Not for rain, at first, but for wind. We had spent weeks building a place that didn’t exist before: shade cloths stretched against the sun, a big central tent that would become the heart of everything. And then the wind came, hard and insistent, and we lay awake certain it would take the whole thing with it \u2014 the cloths, the tent, the weeks of work by six volunteers and our president, Roberta. It held. All of it. By Saturday morning the wind had gone quiet, the tent was standing, and people were arriving. \u00a0 Roberta opened the day, and she opened it honestly. We are not here, she said, to tell anyone what they must do. We came to share a few things we have learned with our own hands, in our own soil, and to understand together how the ground and the plants and everything living between them actually work. We live in a moment when everything feels like too much \u2014 too big, too far from our own hands \u2014 and that feeling is exactly what tempts us to do nothing at all. And to what end? But there is an end. We are responsible for our own lives, our own gardens, our own fields, and that is already so much. One grain of sand makes someone else want to add theirs. The grain becomes a heap, and the heap becomes a revolution. You believe it too, she told the room, or you wouldn’t have woken early on a Saturday to come to Badolato. \u00a0 Then it was time for the word that would carry the morning: compost. We walked to the composting area together, notebooks out, and built a hot pile there and then, layer by layer, talking through each one. A few days earlier the volunteers had built a second pile, so that when the thermometer went in, everyone could read the number for themselves. The needle had climbed deep into the heat of active decomposition. You can talk about microbial activity all you like; it is another thing to put your hand near a heap of dead material and feel it giving off warmth like a living body. \u00a0 After the coffee break came the part we love most to teach. It starts, as all of it does, with photosynthesis \u2014 and with the strange, generous fact that a plant sends much of the sugar it makes down into the soil, on purpose, to feed the life around its roots. \u00a0 From there the whole invisible cast: bacteria, fungi, protozoa, nematodes \u2014 each of our tiny friends carrying its own tools, the bacteria with little more than a screwdriver, the fungi a whole toolbox \u2014 eating one another and passing minerals along until they reach the plant that started it all. There were questions. There were faces that changed halfway through a sentence. And then rhizophagy \u2014 plants pulling bacteria in through their roots, digesting them, letting them go again. Plants, it turns out, are not vegetarians. We have rarely seen a room wake up so fast. \u00a0 Then the rain came, hard at moments, and it did not matter at all, because the central tent did exactly what we had built it to do. Everyone stayed dry, and listening, under the sound of it. \u00a0 Lunch arrived from a restaurant in Davoli: local dishes, generous, the kind of food that keeps people at the table longer than they meant to stay. That lingering is not a pause from the festival. It is the festival \u2014 the talking, the swapping of stories, the quiet forming of ties that only happens over a shared plate. \u00a0 The afternoon belonged first to Giorgia Liberati, of Radici Connesse, who came to talk about compost extracts and teas. Her strength was that none of it stayed theoretical. She works in the north of Italy, and she brought numbers \u2014 real results on grapevines, on kiwi, even on olives. The questions came at her like a small storm, and she answered every one, until people weren’t only listening but offering their own experiments. It became a conversation. \u00a0 \u00a0 Then we closed the teaching part of the day with the subject Terranima can’t stop thinking about: the parallel between the microbiology of the soil and the microbiology of our own gut. On the board we drew the two digestive systems side by side. The plant’s begins outside itself, in the sugars it feeds to the microbes at its roots, the way ours begins at the mouth; the first worms and insects breaking material down are a kind of teeth. And then the line that tends to land hardest: we spray antibiotics on our fields, several times a year, and then wonder why the soil forgets how to digest. \u00a0 So we ended with a question of our own. How do we actually change this? Where would you even begin? Some were sure these practices could never work at scale. Others answered that they already do, and gave examples. And then one participant offered something simple and concrete: a group of us, one piece of land, a shared trial \u2014 learn it together, prove it together. By the end, contacts had been exchanged, and two local growers had agreed to try these methods on their own land, alongside Terranima and Giorgia: one with olives and citrus, and another farming just outside Badolato. Ideas came out of that last hour that we genuinely hope take root in the weeks ahead. \u00a0 Some of the people under the tent had been with us the year before, and told us, quietly, that the festival had changed how they work their soil \u2014 that they had gone home, tried the preparations, and watched them work.
